Kenyan News Stories of the Day

Topic: treatment of women in Kenya
Specifics: Sunday Marked the International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation but unjust treatment still exists in many areas
http://allafrica.com/stories/201102070003.html

Topic: the natural world
Specifics: Rising Forest Fire Incidents
http://www.businessdailyafrica.com/Corporate%20News/Kenya%20Forest%20Service%20sounds%20the%20alarm%20over%20rising%20fire%20incidents/-/539550/1102946/-/dp9531z/-/

Topic: Removing the slums of Kenya
Specifics: Ministry of Housing aims to eradicate all slums
http://www.capitalfm.co.ke/business/Kenyabusiness/Sh800b-needed-to-purge-Kenya-slums-5236.html

*this is an older news article. Very little news is available on the slums and in fact close to nothing comes up for Kariobangi in a google news search
*none the less I found this article very interesting and relevant to my latest post and one of our class readings  (http://www.theworkingcentre.org/wscd/pubs/understanding-canada.pdf - chapter 1: What is Development?). Will the changes involve speaking with the people themselves? Will new housing become occupied by the people of the slums or others of greater wealth? What is the aim of eradicating the slums?

Enjoy the reading :)
And don't worry .. their not all that long

  1. Thanks for these! I am looking forward to reading some of the work by Kenyan authors which I will blog about, I also picked up a learn how to speak swahili book and am practicing! Trying to engage in the culture without being there is important to indev work and I can see you embracing this with the news articles! Happy Reading!
